Album Review: Arcade Fire “The Suburbs” (10/27/10)

(written 10/27/10 for MojaMoja)

“Let’s go downtown and talk to the modern kids. They will eat right out of your hand. Using great big words that they don’t understand. They say Rococo…” The Canadian band has come out with yet another album we can rock to anytime of the day, The Suburbs. Arcade Fire is fronted by the husband and wife duo of Win Butler and Régine Chassagne. The first single, “Ready to Start” amps you up with snare drum bursts and guitar rifts, but balances out with Butler’s very indie rock voice hum. Their words bring the listener into the realities of life in the suburbs. Chassagne’s high pitched vocals bring hope and happiness after a few solemn tracks in “Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)”, which brings sound very similar to Passion Pit’s disco backbeat and massive keyboard basslines. Hope to let them out you in The Suburb zone at the Shrine Oct. 7 & 8! “Sometimes I can’t believe it. I’m moving past the feeling….”
