Drake drops new mixtape “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late”

[haven’t been able to post about Drake’s surprise mixtape drop on Friday, February 13th, 2015, until now. It was a lovely surprise I received upon landing in freezing NYC.]

Needless to say, I dig this new album because I rarely dislike anything from the man….and I am still listening to it; digesting all of it before I can say my full opinion. There is a lot of speculation as to why he released it so abruptly like this, especially with all the rumors around the beef between some heavy rappers with Cash Money Records. Pitchfork lays it all out here, along with some great lines alluding to this rumor from the album. Looking forward to seeing the story further unfold….in the meantime, I will continue to have this mixtape on repeat.

“Young but I’m makin’ millions to work the night shift”

Shout out to Henry Krinkle’s “Stay”, which is used in to-be-hit-single “Preach”, after also being used in Nicki Minaj’s “Buy a Heart” in her latest The Pink Print. Hopefully Cash Money paid Henry properly at least…..

KS: Best of 2014 Playlist

Ah 2014….what can I say about you: a year of emerging female vocalists, dream pop, “feelings” music, deep[er] house w/ a 90’s and 80’s twist, rap always, some good indie rock, more pop/unst unst, and a healthy amount of contemporary/funky/classical beat-making (yum, my fave).

Pharrell’s “Happy” was definitely played at LEAST once at every gathering of any mass of humans, around the world. Go P.W. Taylor Swift, Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande, Meghan Trainor was “All About That Bass”….yadda yadda yadda…”I am Lorde Ya Ya Ya”…..

But on to the yummy stuff…..

I’ve put together a playlist of 20 songs from my favorite albums, artists, and experiences of 2014: Some songs represent amazing full albums and break out artists you’ll need to check out, while others stand awesomely on their own. A few in there I had to include as they mark significant moments in my year. But all are songs that have been released in 2014. oh, and Drake.

Honorable mention goes to Pharrell’s “Happy”, Kiesza’s “Hideaway”, and Iggy x Charli XCX’s “Fancy” (yea, I had to) as they were undoubtedly significant players this year. I didn’t include them in the playlist, because, well, I just don’t need to make you listen to those songs for the billionth time :)

Without further adieu…..whether you’re turnt, in chill mode, dancing, or crying; I hope you discover something new and for you:

(boring side note: I had to go with Spotify vs. SoundCloud this year because 1. they had more of the songs/artists I wanted to add and 2. SoundCloud appears to have deleted my 2013 playlist (oh the sadness). Of course, as you indie music lovers know, not everything we love and peep on the blog streets through SoundCloud are avail on the law-abiding Spotify; so not ALL my 2014 faves could be in one playlist.)

Thank you all for listening and your support!

It’s been REAL 2014. Peace Out. XOXO
